Celebrating Positive Community Impact at Wigan Football Hubs

February 20, 2026

Leisure United has welcomed the continued success of the Wigan football hubs at Laithwaite Park and William Foster, highlighting the positive and lasting impact they are having on local communities across the borough.

Opened in 2023 and operated by charitable trust Leisure United, the two state-of-the-art hubs have quickly become thriving community assets, providing high-quality facilities and vibrant, inclusive spaces for people of all ages and backgrounds.

The hubs now support 167 teams from 20 affiliated clubs, delivering thousands of matchday and training opportunities, with more than 3,600 affiliated matches played last season alone. From young players inspired by elite role models such as Wigan-born England international Ella Toone, to adults enjoying casual and recreational football, participation continues to grow year on year.

In addition to grassroots football, the facilities have developed into welcoming community hubs used by a wide range of local organisations. Mental health groups, disability sports providers, women’s wellbeing sessions and culturally diverse community groups regularly base their activities at the sites, reinforcing their role as inclusive spaces that go far beyond sport.

Leisure United has also supported the growth of women’s and girls’ football at both venues, aligning with the Football Foundation’s national HERe to Play campaign. Women and girls now account for an average of 16 per cent of peak-time bookings, with further growth already planned for the coming year.

Health and wellbeing services have also been delivered on site, including NHS community clinics and screenings, helping residents access vital support in familiar and accessible settings.

Mark Coulson, Chief Executive Officer at Leisure United said “We are delighted to see the positive impact that the Wigan Hubs at Laithwaite Park and William Foster are having on the local community. These facilities were designed to be more than just football pitches – they are places where people can come together, feel welcome and improve their physical and mental wellbeing. We are proud to continue serving the community with high-quality facilities and vibrant spaces that can be enjoyed by everyone, now and for generations to come.”

Leisure United continues to work closely with partners including Wigan Council and the Football Foundation to ensure the hubs remain sustainable, inclusive and responsive to local needs, reinforcing their position at the heart of community life in Wigan.
